Scientists uncover mechanism that controls the fitness of cells, impacting aging and disease

A novel looping mechanism that involves the end caps of DNA may help explain the aging of cells and how they initiate and transmit disease, according to new research from UT Southwestern Medical Center cell biologists.

The UT Southwestern team found that the length of the endcaps of DNA, called telomeres, form loops that determine whether certain genes are turned off when young and become activated later in life, thereby contributing to aging and disease.

“Our results suggest a potential novel mechanism for how the length of telomeres may silence genes early in life and then contribute to their activation later in life when telomeres are progressively shortened. This is a new way of gene regulation that is controlled by telomere length,” said Dr. Jerry W. Shay, Professor and Vice Chairman of Cell Biology at UT Southwestern, who led the team with his colleague, Dr. Woodring E. Wright, Professor of…

New immunological findings provide possible therapy for cardiovascular disease

A new immunological mechanism in atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease has been presented in a study from Karolinska Institutet in Sweden. The study is being published in the journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, and also indicates a possible treatment method for these diseases.

Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory processwhere lipidsin the form of LDL cholesterol (‘bad cholesterol’) are stored in the artery walls. The activation of the immune system in the form of T-cells, among others, plays a vital role, particularly for rupturing the atherosclerotic plaques which, the primary cause of myocardial infarction and stroke.

LDL is only taken up in the artery wall after modification, a process where oxidation is one probable underlying cause. Enzymes in the artery walls can also modify LDL making it inflammatory. Most basic scientific studies in the field are based mouse models with genetic changes as mice cannot develop arteriosclerosis or cardiovascular…

Update! Cat Scan # I Lost Count

wrong bitch

Today I saw my oncologist Dr. S for my three-month checkup and to get the results of Mondays CAT Scan. Usually she calls me the day after the test to give me the results which is always “no sign of cancer.” This time she didn’t, so I won’t lie, I was a little nervous. Was she waiting to give me the bad news in person? Finally, while I waited in her office, I decided I would deal with whatever she had to say. I had to stop worrying over things I cannot control.

All my doctors are part of a teaching hospital/medical center, so before my primary doctor comes in, a resident or medical student comes to see me. Today it was a friendly medical student. He asked me the typical questions about how I was doing and I answered them but kept thinking, what about my scan? He…
